Why does the distance sometimes change when I am standing still?

All GPS devices have a certain level of inaccuracy, due to the nature of GPS. The accuracy can be affected by the atmospheric conditions, the number of visible GPS satellites, buildings, etc. This inaccuracy is plus or minus from the true distance. What you are noticing is called drift - where the position the GPS receiver thinks it is in changes due to these inaccuracies.
